Healing & Destruction
There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. Proverbs 12:18 ESV
Words, they build up and they break down. It’s so common in our culture, I’m sure you know of at least one person who struggles with low self esteem because they were always TOLD they’re not good enough. Maybe that person is/was you.
Do you remember this saying, “Sticks and stones can break my bones, but words can never hurt me”? The older I get, the more I realize that’s a lie. The scripture says rash words are like sword thrusts (stabs). I don’t need to be stabbed to know the damage it can cause.
Many Christians fight to love themselves because of words that tore them down growing up, or even words being spoken to them now by a verbally abusive spouse.
The good news is this, words don’t only break down, but they can build up, especially when coming from the one who created you, and loves you the most. I just did an “I am series” on my social media accounts reaffirming what God says about us. I am a light. I am loved. I am a winner. I am able. I am whole. I am accepted. I am powerful. You can counteract the lies! Don’t sit and die by the blows being thrown at you. Speak to your soul so that you may heal, so that you will no longer be deceived. Build up yourself and others with the truth, and tear down the lies. Words are like bullets, use them carefully & let’s break the trend of wounding with intent one kind word at a time.
Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.
Colossians 4:6 ESV
Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body.
Proverbs 16:24 ESV
Build up yourself, and others with the truth of God.
