The Power of the Spoken Word 1

Life & Death

Do we really consider the things we say, and their effect? Are you careful not to say hurtful, destructive things? Or do you just speak as you will? Do we really understand the power of words?

Proverbs 18:21 ESV says death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits. Likewise, a gentle tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it breaks the spirit (Proverbs 15:4 ESV).

Death in this sense is 2 fold. We can speak and destroy something that should have lived. In the same way, by our authority we can speak and shut down operations of the enemy.

On the other hand, as was the case with Ezekiel and the dry bones, or Jesus and Lazarus. We have the power through our words to resurrect the dead things in our lives.

So you choose. You can destroy a person or you can build them up with kind words. You can bring death to low self esteem, doubt, fear and all the other schemes of the enemy. Or you can destroy your own spirit by telling yourself you can’t overcome it. You can speak life to your dying spirit; into your family; marriage; relationships. Or you can continue to spew out angry words that bring nothing but destruction.

Whatever it may be, know that there is power in the spoken word. Whether you choose to use it for good or evil, you’ll reap what you sow.
